From 1999-2002 Martien van Steenbergen set up and ran the Sun Java Center at Sun Microsystems Nederland as Practice Manager. In his role, Martien has been responsible for:

  • Starting up, leading and managing the Dutch Sun Java Center from scratch;
  • Managing the SJC profitably (€1.2M+ revenue on consultancy only), for three consecutive years;
  • Recruiting 11 best-of-breed senior Java Architects and Consultants (1999-2002);
  • Leading and managing both the Sun Java Center (SJC) and the Internet Service Provider (ISP) team (20 senior technical consultants) at Sun Professional Services;
  • Profit & Loss responsible (revenue, spending, utilization (non-idle time), profit, margin);
  • Personal and professional development of team members;
  • Member of both local Dutch and international corporate management team;
  • Annual planning and budgeting;
  • Quarterly worldwide management team meetings;
  • Synergizing with local and global sales organization;
  • Co-developing, articulating and marketing the SunTone Architectural Methodology, focusing on Quality of Service as well as functionality and Use Cases in Enterprise Architectures, embellished by Agile Development practices like XP (eXtreme Programming), DSDM and light-weight RUP (Rational Unified Process) in combination with Prince II project management standards;
  • Helping clients succeed by developing ebusiness strategies and architectures, and the way technology can help realize their business objectives;
  • Creating and partly implementing a radical business-focused redesign of Vodafone Live! architecture and process, slashing operational expenses and time to new services in half;
  • Co-architecting and co-ordinating the Vizzavi Vodavone Live! portal, including the network, systems and application layers; a two-year multimillion project for Sun; (press release available on request);
  • Auditing, rearchitecting and rebuilding D-reizen’s (travel broker) ecommerce website to a responsive, scalable, robust and successful implementation in six months (customer success story available on request);
  • Served customers like Vodafone/Vizzavi, D-reizen, AEGON (insurance), Virtex (transport), Goodlot (media/lottery), Provincie Gelderland (government) and Spott (internet auctioning).
